PHNOM PENH: Prime Minister Hun Sen has released a message thanking the 4th Mandate Commune Council members who were elected in 2017. The Prime Minister acknowledged that some commune chiefs did make small mistakes, but when assessing their merits, they still had more pros than cons.
In a message released by Prime Minister Hun Sen on Friday, 3 June, he said that the commune council members who were elected in 2017 really served the people well. They helped organize vaccination distribution through the communes to make sure that everyone was able to get vaccinated during the major Covid-19 outbreak in Phnom Penh, and in other provinces as well. He said they have all worked hard to serve the people, and noted that during the time some areas had lockdown, the local commune authorities were required to do a lot of work to serve the public, and assistance was organized and given according to the instructions of each commune.
The Prime Minister stated, "For the past five years, you have really worked hard and are really tired. I, Your Prime Minister, am very grateful, and there may be a large number of you who may be re-elected to serve in the future.”
He further thanked all members of the commune for the good deeds they have done in the past, and said that he still trusts that the commune council members will continue to take care of the people during the election process, until the end of their mandate, especially regarding the implementation of circulars calling for an alcohol ban on election weekend, as well as the implementation of various measures in the health sector, particularly the ‘3 Do’s and 3 Don’t’s.’
The Prime Minister also thanked council members once again for the great sacrifices they made to protect the lives of the people without discrimination against political parties, especially during the management of the spread of Covid-19 and the distribution of vaccinations to protect the lives of the people. Controlling the number of infections and death toll from Covid-19 for almost a month were under the responsibility of the commune leaders, who, as a result, did not see their families for a while as it was necessary for them to join the fight against Covid-19 and focus on their work. This is a big sacrifice that the Prime Minister said he must thank the outgoing commune council for.
It should be noted that the 4th Commune Council of 2017 will complete its mandate after the 5th Commune Council is elected in on Sunday, 5 June 2022. A total of 17 political parties are taking part in 2022’s commune council election, competing for 11,622 seats nationwide from 1,652 communes and districts, and with more than 9.2 million people registered to vote.
